The Vagabond Motel, which opened in 1953, I believe, was owned by a group that included my uncle. Our first family vacation was to Miami in 1954, when I was 8, and, of course, we stayed at the Vagabond. We hit all of the tourist traps in the area, but for us kids, spending the better part of a day at the pool was the highlight. My 2 brothers and I learned to swim there. Free orange juice at poolside every afternoon at 3. I helped once, and dropped a whole tray of filled cups. Thus ended my waiter career. We did get to work the switchboard from time to time - one of those cord and plug things like Lily Tomlin used on Laugh In.
