Back in the middle 1990′s, I had a house in Belle Meade sitting four blocks east of the Vagabond Motel and every time I wolked by , I felt a sense of festivity and fun still in the air coming from the premises of the motel when its glory days used to crown the night life along side Biscayne Boulevard in Miami

The Vagabond Motel, which opened in 1953, I believe, was owned by a group that included my uncle. Our first family vacation was to Miami in 1954, when I was 8, and, of course, we stayed at the Vagabond. We hit all of the tourist traps in the area, but for us kids, spending the better part of a day at the pool was the highlight. My 2 brothers and I learned to swim there. Free orange juice at poolside every afternoon at 3. I helped once, and dropped a whole tray of filled cups. Thus ended my waiter career. We did get to work the switchboard from time to time – one of those cord and plug things like Lily Tomlin used on Laugh In.
